GHA meaning in aviation

GHA — Ground Handling Agent

GHA means Ground Handling Agent, the external or internal service provider that performs airport ground handling functions for an operator.

Where this term is used / What it means in practice

GHA is used in station manuals, ground handling agreements, turnaround planning, load control, passenger handling, ramp coordination, and disruption management. The GHA may provide check-in, boarding, baggage, ramp, load sheet, de-icing coordination, cargo, or dispatch support services depending on the contract and airport structure.

In practice, the GHA acts for the operator, but the operator does not hand over its regulatory responsibility simply by outsourcing the work. That distinction matters in safety oversight, occurrence reporting, contracted activity control, and the way ground events are investigated.

What EASA says

The air operations framework requires operators to control contracted activities and to run their operation under an approved management system and operations manual. Ground handling activity therefore has to sit inside the operator’s controlled system, even when a third-party GHA performs the work. Recent amendments to the air operations framework also increased the regulatory attention on ground handling interfaces.

Common confusion / Common mistakes

The most common confusion is GHA versus airport authority versus operator staff. The airport may provide infrastructure. The operator retains operational responsibility. The GHA provides contracted services under the operator’s control framework.

Another mistake is assuming a contracted GHA manages the operator’s compliance risk by default. It does not. The operator must still define responsibilities, interfaces, reporting paths, supervision, and contracted activity controls.
