147.A.110 sets the standard for type and task training course content and examinations, ensuring they adequately prepare maintenance personnel for work on specific aircraft types or maintenance tasks.
What it means in practice
Type and task training courses must provide sufficient depth and breadth of coverage to ensure that maintenance personnel can safely and competently perform maintenance on the specific aircraft type or carry out the specific task. The training standard must reflect the complexity of the aircraft systems and the nature of the maintenance tasks involved.
Examinations must assess both theoretical understanding and, where applicable, practical competence. The standard must be high enough to ensure that only candidates who have genuinely acquired the necessary knowledge and skills receive a passing result. The organisation must define and document the training and examination standard for each approved course.
Key requirements
Course content must be comprehensive and aligned with the aircraft maintenance documentation. The examination must cover all significant topics in the course. Both theoretical and practical assessment methods must be defined. The training and examination standard must be documented in the MTOE or associated course documentation approved by the competent authority.
Common compliance gaps
Organisations frequently rely on manufacturer-supplied training material without verifying that it meets the Part 147 standard or supplementing it where gaps exist. Examination standards for type courses are sometimes lower than for basic courses, with insufficient rigour applied to practical assessments.
