147.A.65 defines the examination standard for type and task training courses, requiring that examinations adequately assess the candidate's ability to safely perform maintenance on the specific aircraft type or task.
What it means in practice
Type and task examinations must assess whether the candidate has acquired the specific knowledge and practical skills needed to perform maintenance on the aircraft type or carry out the specific task covered by the course. Unlike basic examinations, type and task examinations may use a combination of multi-choice questions, written questions, and practical assessments to test competence.
The examination must cover all significant systems and areas addressed in the course. Practical assessments, where required, must be conducted on the aircraft type or representative training equipment under conditions that reflect realistic maintenance scenarios.
Key requirements
Examinations must test the full scope of the type or task training course content. A combination of theoretical and practical assessment methods may be used. The pass standard must ensure that candidates have an adequate level of competence. Examination results and records must be retained in accordance with Part 147 record-keeping requirements.
Common compliance gaps
A common gap is type examinations that focus heavily on theoretical questions but do not adequately assess practical competence. Organisations also sometimes fail to update examination content when the aircraft type training course is revised to reflect modifications or new procedures, leading to a mismatch between what is taught and what is examined.
