CAMO.A.220 requires the organisation to ensure that an aircraft technical log system is used for recording details of all maintenance carried out on the aircraft, as well as flight time, flight cycles, and any defects or deferred items.

What it means in practice

The aircraft technical log is the real-time interface between the flight crew and the maintenance system. It records details of each flight (flight time, cycles, departure and arrival), any defects reported by the flight crew, maintenance actions taken (including certificates of release to service), and deferred defects. The CAMO must ensure that the technical log system is appropriate for the aircraft type and operation, and that it is being used correctly by all parties.

The CAMO is responsible for ensuring that the information recorded in the technical log is transferred to the continuing airworthiness records and used to update the monitoring system. This includes ensuring that flight hours and cycles are accurately recorded for the purpose of tracking scheduled maintenance intervals and life-limited component usage.

Key requirements

The technical log system must be acceptable to the competent authority. It must capture flight details, pilot-reported defects, maintenance actions performed, certificates of release to service, and deferred defect information. The CAMO must ensure that the information in the technical log is accurate, complete, and transferred to the main continuing airworthiness records in a timely manner.

Common compliance gaps

Delayed transfer of technical log data to the continuing airworthiness monitoring system is a common compliance gap. This can result in the CAMO's records not reflecting the current flight hours or cycle count of the aircraft, potentially leading to maintenance tasks being planned on incorrect data. Illegible entries and incomplete defect descriptions in the technical log are also frequently noted during audits.
