Basic examinations must use multi-choice questions that test the candidate at the knowledge level specified for each subject in Part 66 Appendix I. The knowledge levels range from Level 1 (familiarisation) to Level 3 (detailed knowledge and practical application). The questions must test understanding, not just rote memorisation, and must cover the full breadth of each module.
The organisation must maintain a question bank of sufficient size and quality to ensure that examinations are not predictable and that different sittings present genuinely different challenges. Questions must be reviewed regularly for accuracy, relevance, and clarity.
Key requirements
Each module examination must contain a minimum number of multi-choice questions as specified by the regulation. Questions must be set at the appropriate knowledge level for the Part 66 category. A pass mark of at least 75% is required. The question bank must be large enough to prevent predictability and must be kept secure.
Common compliance gaps
Organisations frequently have question banks that are too small, making examinations predictable and undermining their validity. Questions that test recall of trivial facts rather than understanding of principles are another common finding.
