CAMO.A.010 identifies the competent authority responsible for overseeing and approving continuing airworthiness management organisations under Part-CAMO.

What it means in practice

The competent authority for a Part-CAMO organisation is normally the national aviation authority of the Member State where the organisation has its principal place of business. For organisations located outside the EU that seek a Part-CAMO approval, EASA acts as the competent authority. This authority is responsible for initial approval, ongoing oversight, and enforcement actions if the organisation fails to maintain compliance.

Knowing your competent authority is essential because all applications, changes, and communications related to your approval must be directed to the correct body. The competent authority also determines the oversight programme applicable to your organisation, including the frequency and scope of audits.

Key requirements

The organisation must interact with its competent authority for all matters related to its Part-CAMO approval. This includes initial applications, amendments to the approval scope, notification of changes to the organisation, and reporting of findings or safety issues. The competent authority has the power to limit, suspend, or revoke the approval if compliance is not maintained.

Common compliance gaps

Organisations that operate across multiple Member States sometimes direct communications to the wrong authority. All regulatory correspondence must go to the authority that issued the approval, not the authority of the state where the aircraft is registered or where maintenance is performed.
